Steve Jobs — the man who brought us the iPhone, the iPod and the iMac — has died. The co-founder of Apple was 56 years old. Jobs had been battling a rare form of pancreatic cancer for years. Jobs was an incredible innovator, described as the Thomas Edison of our time. He brought us the The Mac, the first computer to use a mouse, Ipod, Ipad, Iphone, and had an amazing effect on movies with his Pixar Pictures and Disney, as well as a tremendous impact on the telephone industry. Not to mention is impact on the music industry with the Mac G series of computers which are no. 1 with music and video software. All of the Rising Lion albums were recorded, mixed, and or mastered using these products. So reggae music, another horizon that he impacted.

" McNamee says that in addition to introducing us to desktop publishing and computer animated movies, Jobs should be credited with creating the first commercially successful computer.

"Any one of those would have qualified him as one of the great executives in American history," McNamee says, "the sum of which put him in a place where no one else has ever been before. To me he is of his era what Thomas Edison was to the beginning of the 20th century."

"Jobs was eventually fired in a 1985 boardroom coup led by John Sculley — the man Jobs himself had hired to be CEO of Apple. But Jobs was driven to make computers vehicles for creativity, and after he left Apple, he purchased a little-known division of Lucas film and renamed it Pixar.

In 1995, Pixar released the first animated feature to be done entirely on computers. That film, Toy Story, was a huge success, and Pixar followed it with other big hits including Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles and Finding Nemo."

"In 1998, as interim CEO of Apple, Jobs introduced the iMac and once again helped remake the computer industry. According to venture capitalist McNamee, the iMac was the first computer made to harness the creative potential of the Internet.

"The iMac reflected the transition of consumers from passive consumption of content to active creation of entertainment," McNamee says. "People could write their own blogs, make their own digital photographs and make their own movies. Apple made all the tools to make that easy and they did at a time when Microsoft just wasn't paying attention."

Three years after the iMac, Jobs announced Apple's expansion into the music industry with a breakthrough MP3 player — the iPod.

"This is not a speculative market," he said as he introduced the iPod in 2001. "It's a part of everyone's life. It's a very large target market all around the world."

The iPod was a classic Jobs product — easy to use and nice to look at. Apple sold tens of millions of iPods, and the iTunes store became the No. 1 music retailer.

Six years later, Apple released the iPhone — a device whose elegance and user friendliness blew other phone/music players out of the water.

In 2010, Apple created yet another groundbreaking device with the introduction of the iPad. With its color touch-screen, the tablet gave users the ability to surf the Web, send e-mail, watch videos and read e-books.

Book publishers weren't the only ones to embrace the new tablet. A host of magazines, newspapers and broadcast news organizations, including The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal and NPR, created iPad-specific apps that helped showcase stories — and images — in a tabloid-style layout.

And in January 2011, Apple reached a milestone by surpassing 10 billion downloads from its App Store — a sign of just how popular the company's devices have become with consumers.

"Simplifying complexity is not simple," says Susan Rockrise, a creative director who worked with Jobs. "It is the greatest, greatest gift to have someone who has Steve's capabilities as an editor and a product designer edit the crap away so that you can focus on what you want to do."

Rockrise believes Jobs touched pretty much anyone who has ever clicked a mouse, sent a photo over the Internet, published a book from a home computer or enjoyed portable music or a computer-animated movie."

Hank, your comments about the president being compared to Hitler were very disappointing. Polarization, is one thing , calling fellow Americans enemies seems to be something else. I am one of those struggling right now as a first generation independent musician, and republicans haven't been the best to us.
All of us coming together is what has made this country , and is what is needed right now. Our respective represenatives in congress and the senate need to put their partisan politics, self interests and opinions aside and do what is right for the country as a whole. Calling each other " enemies" and farther polarization is counter productive.
I did'nt happen to care alot for Bush and his administration , however , we all have to respect the office of the President of The United states of America. One Aim, One Destiny, One People, One Love.

The Republicans and Fox news are a joke! They seem to forget that it was under their watch and policies that we got into all of this , budget deficit, wars, recession etc. The american people had better take a good and earnest look at what is transpiring in our country.

Had to turn the laptop back on. Why do I feel that South Carolina Republicans and myself , dont even live in the same country? Healthcare for everyone is wrong? If you believe in equality in opportunity, education, healthcare , then you are a socialist? Really?

How much socialism was prevalent when they annexed land from Native Americans, and Slavery was in full swing! Was there equal opportunity then, and and should we all have been judged, accepted or denied for opportunity, education, healthcare by what we truly deserved? If so, our modern times would be very different.

It is inconsistent with our constitution and beliefs to entertain such rhetoric.

LOS ANGELES – Singer Nate Dogg, whose near monotone crooning anchored some of rap's most seminal songs and helped define the sound of West coast hip-hop, has died at age 41.

Attorney Mark Geragos said Nate Dogg, whose real name was Nathaniel D. Hale, died Tuesday of complications from multiple strokes.

Nate Dogg wasn't a rapper, but he was an integral figure in the genre: His deep voice wasn't particularly melodic, but its tone — at times menacing, at times playful, yet always charming — provided just the right touch on hits including Warren G's "Regulate," 50 Cent's "21 Questions," Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode" and countless others.

While Nate Dogg provided hooks for rappers from coast to coast, the Long Beach, Calif., native is best known for his contributions to the West Coast soundtrack provided by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Tha Dogg Pound and more. Nate Dogg was even part of a "supergroup" featuring Snoop Dogg and Warren G, called 213.

Nate Dogg, who had suffered strokes in recent years, also put out his own solo projects but was best known for his collaborations with others.

Last year, Warren G said Nate Dogg was in therapy but needed help.

"Everybody just gotta keep him in their prayers, cause he had two strokes and that's real dangerous. And a lot of people don't come back from that," he said in an interview to HipHollywood. "Cause the game needs him, I need him."

After word of his death spread, tributes poured in on Twitter.

Rising Lion brings positive message to Boise

An eager crowd of college students, dread heads and old-timers gathered at Terrapin Station Friday night to hear the infectious reggae of Orlando native, Rising Lion.

The Terrapin Station provided the ideal environment for the event. Known by many as the “local hippie bar,” the club has recently started catering to a wide variety of tastes.

“We provide a more unique atmosphere than most places. Our aim is to be a hub of sub-culture in town. You have the hippies, then there’s a goth night and a punk night too,” said Jaron “Jack” Adkins, co-owner of the bar.

Friday’s event took place as a celebration of Bob Marley’s birthday, and Rising Lion rose to the occasion.

Touring worldwide for over 15 years, Danny Dred — also known as Rising Lion — remains a favorite of the reggae scene. He has shared a stage with the likes of Santana, Toots and the Maytals and Burning Spear.

Rising Lion’s band warmed up the crowd with danceable grooves for the first few minutes, before the man himself hit the stage. Towering over the rest of the group and dwarfing his Fender Stratocaster, the reggae veteran gave the appearance of more offensive lineman than soul musician.

The bass player constantly plugged away, laying a thick rhythm on top of the drums. Peppering in the melody, the keyboardist punctuated the sound with his constant tapping of the keys. The backing guitarist added a trace of blues to the overall groove. Rising Lion’s soloing abilities excelled, his fingers gliding up and down the fret board with a strong element of soul.

In the first act they performed a rousing rendition of Marley’s “Stir it Up,” giving it a unique feel with the addition of an outstanding three part vocal harmony. The vocal range and abilities of the group highlighted the night. They followed with notable takes on band staples such as “Herbalist” and “I See the Light.” The sound ranged from dance hall to dub while also incorporating elements of hip-hop and rock. The crowd danced into the wee hours as if in the middle of summertime in Jamaica.

Like Bob Marley, Rising Lion promotes the positive message of unity and peace. His words of advice for those bogged down by the day-to-day of college and jobs encouraged a sense of stability.

“Stay positive and optimistic; work hard at everything you do. Work hard and play hard, it’s like a pendulum. There has to be balance in your life,” he said.
